Even though it is in the middle of the old town, it has peace and quiet.

In the 15th century, two wealthy families, the Ismaellis and the Gabriellis, saved Korcula from decay and helped preserve buildings and churches.

They also built their palaces in the old town.

Over the centuries, the palaces were rebuilt several times according to the architectural style of the time. Influences from Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque are clearly visible.

Nowadays, Gabriellis Palace houses the Korcula City Museum, while Ismaellis Palace is divided into several lofts for locals.

Stroll through the 26 narrow, cobbled streets of Korcula Old Town and be treated to the outstanding architecture, from the majestic Gothic-Baroque Cathedral of St. Mark to the Venetian-inspired palaces of the Gabriellis and Ismaellis families.

Stop at one of the Old Town's wine bars and sample local wines made on the island. Be sure to try the Grk wine, grown and produced in Lumbarda, and the Posip wine from Cara and Smokvica. For red wines, try Dingac or Postup from nearby Peljesac. Stop for lunch or coffee at one of the café-restaurants in the shade of the pine trees overlooking the east side of the canal.

Enjoy the sunset on the west side of the walls.

All of Korcula's narrow streets are stepped, with the notable exception of the street that runs along the southeastern Street of Thoughts, as there was no need to worry about the steps.

The old town of Korcula is small and can be explored on foot.
